O Tā moko é considerado sagrado pelo povo Maori. O Tā moko original envolve a genealogia e história do Maori. Para as tatuagens ocidentais com temática Maori o termo mais adequado é Kirituhi, que significa simplesmente pele desenhada.
Tā moko are marks on the body and on the skin made by the Maori people of New Zealand. Are not properly tattoos because they are carved by chisels (made from albatross bones) and not through punctures. The Tā moko is considered sacred by the Maori people. The original Tā moko involves Maori genealogy and history. For Western Maori-themed tattoos the more appropriate term is Kirituhi, which simply means skin drawn.
